Modimolle is the commercial centre of the Waterberg district which is a malaria free area and is renowned for its export of grapes and soft fruits such as peaches and watermelons. Other farming activities include game management and conservation including a crocodile park, cattle ranching, peanuts, onions and maize.

Regarded as the gateway to the Waterberg, the area is particularly popular for its diverse outdoor recreational activities, such as golf, sky diving, quad biking, game viewing, horse riding and hiking, nature trails and luxury hunting safaris. Birdwatching at the internationally famous Nylsvlei Nature Reserve, where almost 200 species can be easily spotted in the course of weekend, attracts many visitors to the area.

Pleasant climate with hot summers and moderate winters makes Modimolle a year round getaway destination. The route from Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) to Modimolle (Nylstroom) along the 101 offers both an alternative to the toll road and exceptional scenery.

Famous South Africans associated with Modimolle include Advocate J G Strijdom, a former Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa; the artists Erich Mayer and Pierneef who both lived and worked in the area and the architect Gerhard Moerdijk who specialised in churches and public buildings and designed the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria.

The Waterberg is steeped in history and artefacts found here date back to Stone Age times. The area is a rainbow of culture and tradition which is reflected by the assorted rural tribes such as the Bapedi, Tswana and Basotho, while the Afrikaans Voortrekkers also left their mark on the area
